Splatterhouse 3 Sega Genesis Mega Drive Video Game Cartridge 1993
Sega Genesis/Mega Drive non oem reprodction Splatterhouse 3 video game cartridge.
Splatterhouse 3 is a 1993 horror-themed beat 'em up game developed by Now Production and published by Namco for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. As the final installment of the original 16-bit trilogy, it is widely remembered for its dark atmosphere, graphic violence, and cinematic storytelling.
Story Line
The game takes place five years after the events of Splatterhouse 2. Rick Taylor has moved past his traumatic experiences, married his girlfriend Jennifer, and become a successful Wall Street trader. They now have a young son named David and live in a massive mansion in Connecticut.
However, the evil entity known as the "Evil One" invades Rick's home. Demonic forces kidnap Jennifer and David, trapping them inside the mansion. Left with no choice, Rick puts on the ominous Terror Mask once again to slaughter his way through his own home and save his family.
Core Gameplay Mechanics
- Non-Linear Exploration: Unlike the strict left-to-right side-scrolling of the first two games, this entry allows full 2D movement (up, down, left, right) similar to Streets of Rage. Players use a map screen to navigate through different rooms of the mansion to find the exit.
- The Countdown Timer: Every stage has a real-time countdown timer. Your speed drastically alters the story. If you clear the stage before time runs out, you save your family members. If you fail, they are permanently altered or killed, which directly dictates which of the four unique endings you receive.
- Mutant Mode: By collecting "Eldritch Orbs" from fallen enemies, Rick can fill a Power Meter. Activating this meter causes the Terror Mask to fuse directly into Rick's flesh, transforming him into a massive, muscular mutant. In this state, his attacks deal massive damage and he gains a special spirit-shattering move.
- Weapons: While Rick fights mostly with his bare fists, kicks, and grapple moves, he can pick up environmental weapons scattered throughout the mansion, including concrete blocks, wooden clubs, and meat cleavers.
Visual Style and Presentation
- Digitized Cutscenes: The narrative is pushed forward using digitized photographic images. These cutscenes gave the game an unsettling, cinematic feel for its time.
- Graphic Violence: The game features highly detailed gore, featuring grotesque monsters that explode into pieces of flesh, decapitations, and pools of blood. It was one of the premier titles that prompted Sega to establish its own V.R.C. (Videogame Rating Council) system, where it received an MA-13 rating.
