The Death and Return of Superman is a side-scrolling beat 'em up video game released for the Sega Genesis in early 1995. Developed by Blizzard Entertainment and published by Sunsoft, the game is a direct adaptation of the massive 1992–1993 DC Comics crossover storyline of the same name.
Game Overview & Storyline
The game allows players to experience one of the most famous arcs in comic book history across nine distinct stages. The narrative follows:
- The Death: Superman fights an army of Underworlders in Metropolis before facing the ultimate showdown against the unstoppable monster, Doomsday, resulting in both of them dying.
- The Reign: Four replacement heroes emerge to take his place: The Cyborg Superman, The Eradicator (Last Son of Krypton), Steel (The Man of Steel), and Superboy.
- The Return: The narrative culminates in the resurgence of the true Man of Steel to reclaim his mantle.
Gameplay Mechanics
- Five Playable Characters: Players control Superman and all four of his successors. Character selection is locked and pre-determined by the level's story progression.
- Combat & Powers: Every character can move in all directions, perform standard melee punches, grapples, and throws. Each hero features a unique projectile power (like Superman's heat vision or Superboy's telekinetic blasts) and a screen-clearing "ultimate" attack.
- Flight Navigation: Characters can fly at will to bypass obstacles, avoid ground-based enemies, or fight airborne opponents.
- Level Variety: While mostly a traditional brawler, the game includes unique flying levels where the camera scrolls automatically, shifting gameplay into a shoot-'em-up style.
